Hyde Park is a thriving area, situated in between the University of Leeds and Headingley. Due to the location, as well as its number of bars and venues, Hyde Park has a large and exciting student community.
The area consists of a large space of greenery, stretching across Hyde Park which is where all the students tend to hang out in the summer. The park also holds a basketball court, skate park, and a children's play area. It's only a short walk from Headingley and Burley, and just a 15 minute walk into Leeds City centre. The park is usually very popular for events such as, Bonfire Night and Unity Day.
Fortunately, Hyde Park is only minutes away from the City centre, if you travel via bus or car, and is roughly a 25 minute walk into the centre if you like to walk. There are a number of regular buses that pass through Hyde Park, usually running every few minutes, to get to and from the centre of Leeds or if you're wanting to travel up to the Headingley or Otley areas.
If you would prefer to travel by train, or are wanting to travel further out from Leeds, the train station at Burley Park has regular running trains that can take you in to the City centre, or using the Harrogate line you can easily get to and from York and Knaresborough.
Throughout Hyde Park there are a number of independent cafes, bars, restaurants and more.
For your everyday essentials and food shopping there is a 24 hour Co-op at the bottom of Victoria Road, as well as a 24 hour Sainsburys, and a 24 hour One Stop at the corner of Hyde Park, so you'll never be short of supermarkets in the area and they're open 24 hours a day, which is ideal for those late night drinks and snacks!
If you want quirky shops and cafes, Hyde Park is the place to be! If you take a walk down to Hyde Park corner you will find an array of vintage clothing shops, antique stores, barber shops, restaurants, and many other independent food stalls including LS6 cafe.
Due to the area becoming increasingly popular among students, over recent years there have been more and more local places opening up in Hyde Park including ice cream parlours, mobile repair shops, dentists, and a post office. So, whatever your needs are, whether you need an emergency pint of milk for your morning brew, or your phone ended up breaking at last nights party, the solution is here in Hyde Park, right on your doorstep!
Part of living in the city as a student is about the local nightlife, where you can chill out with friends after a day of assignments, or meet new friends. Well, Hyde Park offers a few options of nightlife, and all to suit your student budget.
If you want a cheap night, just having a few drinks with friends, you can head down to the Hyde Park pub, situated on Hyde Park corner. It's the ideal place for laid back, mid-week drinks, or for pre-drinks before heading in to the City for a night out.
If you're looking for some live music and entertainment, the Royal Park pub is a popular place with the student community, as it also has its own venue downstairs, where they have regular gig nights. They also hold a pub quiz, so it's the perfect place if you want more than just a pint in the pub.
Situated next door to the Royal Park is Brudenell Social Club, where you can find some of the best live music events in the UK. Holding an array of different music events from rock, metal or punk, to hip-hop, there's sure to be something to suit your taste. But if you want a chilled night of having a few drinks and a game of pool, this is probably one of the best places in the City to be.
For the times you may have a free day, other than checking out the local bands at some of the nearby bars, why not head down to the Hyde Park Picture House?! This is one of the oldest cinemas in Yorkshire, which screens a mixture of the latest films, but also shows some independent productions and arthouse films, that you won't find at any other cinema. Discounts are offered to students, at the Picture House, so be sure to grab your tickets for you and your friends or partner to enjoy on a rainy day, or a relaxing evening.
Every year, in Hyde Park, the Unity Day event is held. This is a celebration of the local community in LS6, and includes a number of different tents where you will find local live music, and food stalls. It's a great day, and is especially popular among the students in the area, particularly if the weather is right. So, make sure to keep your eye out for this years' event!
As we said, Hyde Park is only a short distance from the centre of Leeds, so it's an ideal location for getting to your University campus.
Both Leeds Beckett and the University of Leeds are within walking distance of Hyde Park, which is why it is such a popular place to live for students attending the Universities. You can either walk or jump on a bus down to the campuses, within a matter of minutes. The Leeds Beckett Headingley campus is also only a short bus journey, in the opposite direction to the City centre, so you're in the ideal location to get to your lectures at any campus, from Hyde Park.
You will also find that Hyde Park is also located only a short distance from the Rose Bowl and Broadcasting Palace.
